I can’t hardly believe it, but it’s my 5th year as a librarian! I’ve decided to dial back my expectations on myself this year. Over the summer, I read Susan Cain’s “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking”, and it really brought me a sense of peace about being myself; not pushing myself to be more extroverted than I am. To keep following my passions, but to do so at a pace that doesn’t leave me feeling exhausted and depleted. :D
For this new school year, I used the Avery template for file folder labels to update the nonfiction shelf labels. And, though the pictures turned out tiny, they really help to give a visual cue to students who don't look in the media catalog before going to the shelves. I also divided up the sports section into major sports, so that it's MUCH easier to keep them organized. :)
My professional goal this year is to work on promoting reading through a variety of outlets. One is by creating an ECH (Early CHapters) Book section located at the end of the Everybody (picture book) section. It has started to house books with chapters, that also have a picture on every page. It’s an effort to help young or struggling readers transition, with confidence, into reading chapter books or novels in the Fiction section.
I’m also planning on meeting with Media Specialists within, and without my county, to collaborate on best practices and to gather new ideas that might benefit the students at my school. I have plans to visit a friend’s library, where she has organized their books by genre, since I’ve sort of started that by making series for LEGO, Transformers, Star Wars, You Choose Books, and Early Readers like Rookie Readers, Green Light Readers, Step Into Reading, etc. I’d also like to look into libraries that have whole number Dewey, but just to look. Genrefication and whole number Dewey would be a HUGE undertaking for me with my all-day, fixed schedule. (Huge as in, I don’t know that I could accomplish it all in one school year.)
Finally, I just want to share that this year’s morning news crew and I have changed up the segments, to be, what I think, are better and more engaging. We’re using Britannica School for our Tuesday “Who was...?” segment, our Thursday “What was...?” segment, and our Friday “Did you know...?” segments and Culturegrams for our Monday “Around the World” segment. On Wednesdays, the kids are recommending a book or book series. I absolutely LOVE that they were willing to change up the morning news shows this year to include these new segments!
Until next time!
p.s. I’m only 26 books into my 100 books GoodReads book challenge, (I changed my challenge to myself from 50 to 100, since I read a lot of picture books.) but like I said, I’m taking some pressure off myself, and working toward the 100 as a goal. I’m reading more books that I want to read, so if I don’t make my goal, c’est la vie.
